The famous editor, political pundit, and literary critic, Norman Podhoretz, once wrote: "The born novelist is defined, for better or worse, by the power to express whatever' it is he understands of the world and of life through the telling of stories about people who are made to seem real."

I miss out by this definition on several accounts. First of all, I'm not a novelist, not even a short-story writer, but at best, a memoirist, more accurately, a writer of tintypes about real people I happen to meet in life and in the city. Secondly, I'm not a "he," the phantom ...
