Why is it then, I wonder, that when the staff at St. Francis Hospital recently tried to get attention focused on concerns of under-staffing and perceived potentially unsafe conditions, the Journal Sentinel buried this information in the back of the business section? Must St. Francis or other facilities undergoing cost-cutting, profit-driven staffing cuts provide a Donald Garrison saga before attention is focused on these real-life dangers in other area institutions? It isn't only Vencor's fault, as a former employee stated in the Journal Sentinel. It's a state-wide shortage of health-care workers in general. This is not a glory job. It takes hard work and patience, along with compassion, to do the best job possible. And just when you think you are ahead, you're not. The state of Wisconsin and Gov. Tommy Thompson need to increase the wages of health-care workers. Then maybe Vencor would be able to change what has been our downfall and get back the good name Mount Carmel had. I believe in this facility, or my great-grandmother and maternal grandmother would not have been residents here for their final years of life. Susan Oaks Milwaukee; Residents know what's good for them For months, dedicated residents and family members of Mount Carmel had spoken out asking that changes in staffing patterns and care quality be addressed. The state of Wisconsin listened and forced changes to happen. But it was Vencor and its employees, as well as the residents and families, that made change happen. Indeed, the future was brighter until Oct. 19, when the people of Mount Carmel were told that it doesn't matter what comfort level they had achieved; Mount Carmel is finished. Whose lives are we talking about? The threat of Mount Carmel Health and Rehabilitation's closure is wreaking havoc on hundreds of individual lives, lives that span eight or nine decades. Now these people are being told to leave their home, where it took them months to adjust. The state of Wisconsin and federal regulators are telling the residents of Mount Carmel what is best for them. The residents already know what is best for them; they demonstrated that earlier this year when they spoke out. Why did the state listen to them then and not now? What is the meaning of dignity in the minds of the residents and family members who call Mount Carmel home? The right to receive excellence of care? Yes. Dignity should also include the right to have a voice and the right to emotional stability. The residents need to know precisely what it is that is condemning their home, especially considering the commitment that Vencor has already demonstrated. The residents deserve to have assurance that they will have future stability. Can a new group of caregivers and a strange new environment promise this? Terri J.
