AN UNASSUMING FACTORY TUCKED AWAY in the small village of Hyde, near Manchester, is not the most likely base for a unique project looking to revolutionise space travel. The factory, complete with mission control and bits of rockets and cockpit paraphernalia lying around, could easily be mistaken for the props warehouse of Buck Rogers or Thunderbirds: But there are no ray-guns, no spandex jumpsuits, and not a robotic side-kick in sight.
