John Paul II has put a prelate already favored to follow him as pope in an even stronger position by naming Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, 68, as the successor to famed Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, 75, in Milan.
The question of who would succeed Martini, a Jesuit, has long been viewed as an important piece of pre-conclave jockeying.
