An elegant, gilded 19th century ship's figurehead of a woman made for the Canadian bark Edinburgh and carved by John Rogerson of St. John's, New Brunswick, sold for $90,500 at Eldred's July 26 marine art sale.
William Allen, said to have been the American consul in Bermuda in 1899 when the ship was condemned, bought the ship and saved the figurehead. It was later donated to the Addison Gallery at Philips Academy, Andover. The successful bidder was a California dealer. <...
