EL pintor francés Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787-1851) se le adelantó por poco: en 1839 hizo público su descubrimiento, que pasó a llamarse daguerrotipo. Poco después, el británico William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) dio a conocer su invento, el calotipo, o talbotipo, el proceso negativo-positivo, la técnica que hizo posible reproducir imágenes en papel, mientras que Daguerre lo hacia sobre metal. El hallazgo de Talbot, al que él definió como dibujo fotogénico, fue el pilar de la fotografÃa moderna.
