WASHINGTON _ The mosquito-borne West Nile virus is spreading to more of the United States, infecting people earlier in the summer and striking younger victims, federal health officials said Thursday.
The disease claimed its first fatality of the season this week _ a Louisiana woman in her 70s _ and Louisiana will confirm one or two more West Nile deaths on Friday, said state epidemiologist Raoult Ratard.
