The onset of World War II fomented an unbridgeable cleavage within the ranks of liberal Protestantism in America. Charles Clayton Morrison, editor of The Christian Century, espoused a pacifist-internationalism rooted in a sense of historical betrayal in the aftermath of World War I. His social gospel message focused upon the structural evils of the war system, capitalism, and power-mad leaders.
