Rising sharply from the sea, the 600-foot-high walls of the Marin Headlands, in Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), appear impenetrable to hikers. But now a key 1-mile section of the Coastal Trail has been completed, climbing up and over the headlands to bridge the last gap in this 35-mile-long trail between Fort Funston in San Francisco and Point Reyes to the north.
