CAUTION: Travel right now in the Tikal region might be a bit dicey.
The U.S. State Department sent out an announcement July 3 alerting travelers to possible civil disturbances and highway blockades. In June, former civil defense patrol members seeking back pay blocked roads and briefly detained tourists. No one was injured. The government has resolved the situation, but the State Department's announcement does not expire until Oct. 1.
