AN INTERPRETIVE SIGN at a scenic stop on the Skyline Drive tells visitors how hemlock trees helped create the shady, open-understory forest typical of the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge. The sign specifically refers to a grove of trees just to the right that stands out above the oaks, hickories and birches.

The only problem is, the hemlocks are dead, every last one of them. In early summer the forest is green and verdant, fresh with new growth. The hemlocks, though, are gray, weathered, leafless and rotting. ...
