In response to higher hay prices, farmers indicated that they expect to harvest 2% more acres. However, government subsidies have limited the shift.
According to this report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that the total acres harvested for hay in 2002 will be 64.709 million acres, up 2% from a year ago and the second largest since 1966 (Table 1). Of these acres, 37% are alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures, which are estimated at 24.134 million acres, up 1% (Table 2). Other acres harvested for hay are expected to be 40.575 million acres, up 2% (Table 3).
