ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST - The Mount Wilson Observatory has stood sentinel over Southern California for nearly 100 years.
A small cadre of astronomers work there year-round, drawn by the stable, chaparral-scented air. The inversion layer that traps smog above Los Angeles also produces some of the best ``seeing'' in the world, meaning there's little air turbulence to distort sunlight or starlight.
But the once-popular tourist stop has seen a dramatic reduction in the number of visitors who want to tour the telescope ...
