Former Watsonville photographer Sam Vestal dead at 70.(Knight Ridder Newspapers)

Sam Vestal, the former Watsonville Register-Pajaronian photographer who took a picture of a gambler holding him at gunpoint in an effort to expose a corrupt district attorney, has died at age 70.
His picture received international attention and helped the small daily newspaper win a Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1956 for its yearlong probe of Santa Cruz County District Attorney Charles Moore.
