Entre 1875 y 1878, a la edad de 3033 años, el portugués José MarÃa Eça de Queiroz publicó sus dos novelas emblemáticas: El crimen del padre Amaro y El primo Basilio.
Eça de Queiroz habÃa nacido en el 47 en la Vila del Conde (algunos dicen que en Povoa de Varzim porque fue hijo natural y aún existen confusiones por el enredo de su acta de nacimiento), y después de estudiar leyes en Coimbra trabajó como cónsul de su paÃs en La Habana, Newcastle, Bristol y ParÃs.
