Asbestos is still legal in the United States. Because it causes cancer, the fibrous mineral has been banned by 20 countries and will be prohibited in the European Union by 2005. So far, at least 200 people who lived in Libby, Mont., have died because they were exposed to it. Still, products containing asbestos are allowed throughout this country.
