Thirty-two years after it was banned, DDT still haunts Fourth Lake.
Nobody knows why.
Some wonder about the 55-gallon drums in the depths of Eagle Bay, where sediment readings show high levels. Others say the DDT lurks somewhere in the nearby hills, perhaps leaking from a barrel to this day.
This is the legacy of a long-lost war on black flies, a crusade that left contaminated fish and the taint of a state Health Department advisory on an otherwise pristine Adirondack lake.
