WE NOTE with sadness the passing of Gordon Bunshaft, architect, an avatar of the modernist International Style. Mr. Bunshaft's masterpiece is Lever House (1952) on New York's Park Avenue. Lewis Mumford wrote of this building, which has been declared a landmark, that it says "all that can be said delicately, accurately, elegantly, with surfaces of glass."
The only rival of Lever House on all of Park Avenue is Mies van der Rohe's nearby Seagram's Building. Mumford indicated the limits of the International Style when he used the phrase "all that ...
