Make no mistake; the Roaring Twenties were well-named. The wine industry in America would do well to look back to those times, not certainly with nostalgia but with resolve to do its part in making sure at least part of it doesn't happen again. I'm talking about the dry victory and the "noble experiment" that so dismally failed.
If you can find a copy, read Frederick Lewis Allen's classic "Only Yesterday," about the 1920s. First published in 1931, it was reprinted by Harper & Row in 1957. You should be able to find it in larger libraries. Allen ...
