Shin-Etsu Chemical is the world's largest manufacturer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), producing more than 3 million tons of the material in plants in the United States, Europe and Japan. It is also performing very effectively in other lines of business, such as the production of silicon wafers and optical-fiber preforms. Katayama Osamu interviewed the company president, Kanagawa Chihiro, to find out his formula for success.
