As the over-the-counter monthly entertainment rags rolled out their annual year-end best ofs and obituary issues to close out 2001, one thing became abundantly clear.

The musical Grim Reaper spared no one.

Unlike 1999, whose heavenly roll call made it appear that a plague had struck down more than its fair share of jazz greats and legends, 2001 didn't discriminate. The 2001 death toll was evenly spread among every conceivable musical genre.
