HUBBARD WOODS, Ill. -- Look hard enough and almost anything can be found, even a store that has not fared well with the workhorse of the footwear industry -- the plain black pump.

Just ask Suzanne Sklare, owner of the 1,100-square-foot Perlie, a women's specialty store who at one point called the black pump "a dog." Located in the North Shore area of suburban Chicago, Perlie carries women's shoes, apparel and accessories.
