TELECOMWORLDWIRE-13 June 2002-Cornell University team develop one atom transistor (C)1994-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com

The Cornell University in New York has reported that it has built a transistor that is the size of an atom.

The new development was made possible by scientists from the university implanting a specially designed molecule in between two gold electrodes to create a circuit. The molecule consisted of a cobalt atom surrounded by carbon and hydrogen atoms which caused electrons to pass from one electrode to the other via the central cobalt atom. Furthermore, the current was capable of being switched off and on by adjusting the voltage near the bridging molecule.
