Clinton's private life not beyond scrutiny; Cost shouldn't be issue in White House cleanup It amazes us how the liberal newscasters like Sam Donaldson, Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw, along with the very liberal Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, are so concerned about the costs of independent counsel Kenneth Starr's investigations. If he were investigating a Republican, it would be "damn the costs and full speed ahead." In our opinion, it would be worthwhile spending $1 billion to get rid of that den of vipers now inhabiting the White House. Godspeed, Kenneth Starr. Howard and Betty M. Hartwig West Allis; Sex scandal may expose grand jury system troubles If anything good is to come from the Clinton sex scandal, it will be the exposing of serious problems inherent in the grand jury system. It is encouraging to see the system compared to an inquisition ("Lewinsky can expect `frightening' grand jury," Feb. 16), for it certainly resembles that in too many instances. The grand jury's original purpose was to gather information without endangering witnesses by allowing them to testify in private. However, grand jury probes have often been used to harass and intimidate fringe groups or politically unpopular movements. The abuse is common; most folks are either members of, or have sympathies with, one or another fringe group that has suffered harassment under the grand jury system. Now that the fringe includes the president of the United States, the will to reform the grand jury system may emerge. Failure to seize this opportunity would be a shame. Since Starr's stated prosecutorial charge is to investigate possible lawbreaking, clearly his investigation of White House spin doctors' possible obstruction of justice falls entirely within the scope of that charge. For the Journal Sentinel editorial to describe Starr's ordering White House aide Sidney Blumenthal to appear in court as "a flagrant example of prosecutorial overreach" defies both logic and common sense!
