WATCHDOGS today warned that government moves to cut the poverty gap across much of Merseyside are not working.

An Audit Commission probe found that the neighbourhood renewal programme is being undermined by competing initiatives and task forces.

The result is more red tape and confusion rather than real help to people who need it most.
