HEAD lice are a plague to schools and an embarrassment to most parents. They shouldn't be. There's no stigma attached to nits - at least I didn't think so when I caught them from my children each year. And they're easy to treat.THE head louse is a tiny insect that lives on our hair.
The adult louse lays its eggs (nits) at the root of hairs, to which they become firmly attached by a kind of cement made by the adult louse.
This distinguishes them from dandruff, which can be flaked off easily with a fingernail.

It's time to call for elimination of world's nuclear weapons; Image of U.S. has fallen abroad The attitude of India regarding its current H-bomb testing is another example of the downward shift of respect for the U.S. and our present government. The snubs and rebukes we are experiencing from the United Nations, Russia, China, Israel, Iraq and others, along with the formation of international coalitions without the U.S., point to the decay of our international stature. It appears that other nations view the U.S. as more concerned with the personal lives of elected officials and foolishly spending millions, perhaps billions, of hours and dollars on relatively petty, self-serving internal issues. The present corruption of our so-called representative government using partisan politics may be the first chapter of a book: "The Decline and Fall of U.S. Global Supremacy." Joseph Grygny Milwaukee; White House should examine U.S. policy Isn't it time for the Clinton administration to look in the mirror and examine U.S. nuclear policies? The lesson we have been teaching since World War II is "might makes right." No wonder India thinks that having nuclear weapons will make it a world power. It learned that lesson well. The purpose of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty is to prevent non-nuclear countries from developing nuclear weapons. Article 6 of the treaty also calls for the five existing nuclear powers to move with all reasonable speed to dismantle their own nuclear stockpiles. The U.S. signed this treaty in 1969, and it went into effect in 1970. For more than 25 years, this treaty was successful in preventing nuclear proliferation except for Israel, which did not sign the treaty but not in eliminating the existing stockpiles. The U.S. still has a stockpile of more than 10,000 nuclear weapons and Russia has a comparable number. According to the Pentagon, we only need about 250 to blow up the entire world. If the nuclear powers had lived up to their end of the deal, India would almost certainly not be pursuing its current course. Catherine Vint Wauwatosa

Emotion, finger-pointing interfere with dialogue about Middle East; Keep U.S. interests first Bravo and accolades to Robert Ashmore for his column (Crossroads, Sept. 21). It was well-written and said what needed to be said in a forthright manner. Let everyone do what's right for the U.S. and not be so blatantly biased in favor of the country from which one's ancestors came. Pride for one's historical background is certainly appropriate, but let's remember the "one from many" concept and keep U.S. interests first. And let the Jews admit to the fact that they weren't the only ones persecuted. It seems to me they are now the persecutors of the Palestinians. Richard T. Baumann Cascade; What was expected? The media liberal as well as conservative have been overwhelmingly in support of the Israelis in their ongoing conflict with the Palestinians. It is time to take a look at events which have caused the present situation. At the end of World War II, Israel, which was then called Palestine, was a protectorate of Great Britain and was inhabited mainly by the people we now call Palestinians and a small minority of Jews. The U.S. and Great Britain decided that Palestine should be a homeland for the Jews and promoted the emigration of thousands of Jews to Palestine. Up to that time there was little friction between Jews and Palestinians. But the Jews wanted a country based on the Jewish religion. Violence erupted and there was a great deal of terrorism by both sides. Palestine was divided between the Jews and Palestinians with the Jews getting the majority of the land. This resulted in a war that was won by the Israelis, and then the Palestinians had nothing. They were forced into a few strips of land and these areas are now threatened. What does anyone expect would happen? Kenneth J. Merkel Colgate; Israel is not a racist state Robert Ashmore wrote that the U.S. government supports Israel because of Jewish money and that Israel is a "racist, religiously bigoted" state that sponsors state terrorism and systematic torture. Money can't buy everything, so clearly Israel's saga strikes a certain moral chord in the hearts of millions of Americans. How else can one explain why the U.S. so vociferously supports the Jewish state? It is not as if the Arabs are lacking financial resources. After Egypt and Syria attacked Israel in 1973, the Arab world placed an oil embargo on America. Arabs control most of the world's oil resources and Arabs who reside in the U.S. have every right to lobby their elected officials. Israel is not a racist state, as its enemies like to believe. If we want to talk about racism, perhaps we should listen to the Arafat appointee who recently referred to Jews as "sons of monkeys and pigs." Zak Mazur Milwaukee
