Q. I am being invaded by these huge things that look like giant mosquitoes. They are in the house and in my car. My children call them "mosquito eaters." Are they?

A. You are observing the brief adult life of insects called crane flies _ insects that have different names in different countries. Here they are sometimes called mosquito eaters, in Britain they are called "daddy-longlegs" and in France "cousins."

The adults live only for a couple of days, and unfortunately they do not eat much of anything, in spite of their apparently large mouthparts. They are ...
