High development costs and complex technical hurdles are short-circuiting the switch to 42-volt electrical systems.
The systems likely won't be ready for mass production until as late as 2010. That is a setback from earlier estimates that 42-volt systems would be included on some 2004 models.
Automakers and suppliers have said the extra power was needed for an array of electronic gizmos, from integrated starter generators to brake by wire, that they planned to introduce on vehicles.
But those plans have changed.
