Roberto Perera was born in 1952 in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay (meaning "river of birds" in an Amerindian language), where he chose, at a very early age, the rare 36-string Paraguayan harp as his primary musical weapon.

In 1973, after completing ten years of harp studies in his native city, Perera moved to the U.S. Initially, the young harpist's "American dream" was not exactly a piece of cake: In order to survive in the Big Apple, the newcomer had to play Paraguayan folk tunes in every Argentine restaurant located in each of the five boroughs.
