By playing one faction against another, Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin eventually pacified the various rebellious groups of the Fronde. Then, on September 7,1651, Louis took advantage of the French law that granted a king the power to rule by himself at age 13 and officially announced that he was acting in his own name. With the king in control, it was difficult for anyone to justify rebellion, even though Louis still allowed his mother and Mazarin to run his government.
