Louis XIV grew up in Paris, in a palace built by Cardinal Richelieu. A bright boy and a good athlete, he never took much to reading or school. By age 12, he had learned to speak elegant French and Spanish. He also learned to ride, fence, and dance. His tutors impressed on him the importance of being a strong, ethical king, and his mother taught him her traditional Catholic faith.
