The past decade has seen a rise in the number of inmates requesting accommodations for Native American religious services (Fordham, 1993; Grobsmith, 1994, 1996; Holscher, 1992; Ross, 1998). This may suggest that-there has been an increase in the number of Native Americans, Alaskan Natives and Native Hawaiians in the nation's prison systems. Yet, this suggestion is not supported by correctional statistics. The purpose of this exploratory study is to determine if there are female inmates who consider themselves Native American and the extent to which they hold such an identity. (1) ...
