The past decade has seen a rise in the number of inmates requesting accommodations for Native American religious services (Fordham, 1993; Grobsmith, 1994, 1996; Holscher, 1992; Ross, 1998). This may suggest that-there has been an increase in the number of Native Americans, Alaskan Natives and Native Hawaiians in the nation's prison systems. Yet, this suggestion is not supported by correctional statistics.
