GREENSBORO -- Andy Bean, finishing his round Thursday by missing yet another easy putt, turned to the bleachers and shouted: "How much will anyone give for this putter?

An auction commenced. Someone shouted $5, another $20. Then $30, before $50 was heard.

"Sold!" Bean shouted.

He handed the putter to the man who passed forward a $50 bill. Bean looked at the money and handed it back.
