It was probably the 1960s film Lawrence of Arabia, which started it all with Peter O'Toole impersonating T E Lawrence very successfully.
In previous years thousands of people had read Lawrence's book The Seven Pillars of Wisdom which was written after his experiences, both military and emotional, in the Arab campaigns running from 1914 onwards.
