ALTHOUGH ALCOHOL consumption patterns differ among tribes, Native Americans as a whole have higher rates of alcohol-related morbidity and mortality compared with other ethnic groups in the United States (Indian Health Service, 1997). Lifetime rates of alcoholism in the Navaho, for example, have been reported to be as high as 70% (Kunitz et al., 1999), a rate similar to that reported for Mission Indians (Gilder et al., 1999) and for a Southwest Indian tribe (Robin et al., 1998).
