The owner of a lead smelter south of St. Louis will offer to buy out 160 homeowners living near its operations because of concerns about lead contamination.

Doe Run Co., which operates a smelter in Herculaneum, Mo., agreed to make the buyout offers after meeting for six hours with representatives of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the state Department of Health.
