Saarland has been atop the Derby Dozen since the first 2002 installment despite his failure to win either of his two races this season. The high esteem in which the son of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled has been held, obviously, has been based on unwavering faith instead of outstanding performance.
After the long-striding colt's harmless fourth-place finish in Saturday's Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, isn't it about time to jump off Saarland? Probably. But wait. . . .
