A lawsuit was filed in mid-February in San Francisco Superior Court to block construction of the new M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in Golden Gate Park [see "Front Page," Apr. '01]. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the scheme has been likened to a 1960s Las Vegas motel by the citizens group People for a New de Young. The lawsuit contends that the new building will urbanize the park, compromise its historical value and increase traffic, and alleges that the plan violates the California Environmental Quality Act, the Golden Gate Park master plan and the city's ...
