In the late 1970s, a JV was formed by the Syrian American Oil Co. (Samoco) and included Deminex, for the 15,750 sq km Al Furat block in Deir Ez Zor area. But in 1982 the JV broke up and Samoco withdrew. In 1983 Pecten of the US and its parent Shell took over Samoco's 65% holding and Deminex its 35% stake. At first Pecten was the operator.
