JUST 300ft stood between Dr Charles Evans and a place in history on the rooftop of the world - the unconquered summit of Mount Everest - as he weighed up his options.

Should he and his climbing partner press on and gamble everything on a bid for glory, or should they take the safer option and turn back down the mountain?

Using new oxygen breathing equipment, Evans, with scientist Tom Bourdillon, had been entrusted with the 1953 Everest expedition's first assault on the summit.
