Derived from the Greek word xero, meaning dry; the term Xeriscape was coined in 1981 by a team of Colorado landscapers and water providers as part of a campaign to encourage water conservation through creative landscaping. This worthy concept has a lingering problem with its image. Properly pronounced zer-i-scape, the term all too often sounds like "zer-o-scape," conjuring visions of unthirsty but ugly gardens covered with wall-to-wall gravel.
