MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. _ Some of Bill Dobo's best childhood memories are of the trips he and his mother took to an old aquarium in New York City.

So when the N.C. Aquarium in Fort Fisher needed money for an expansion, the 75-year-old from Wilmington, N.C., didn't hesitate. He pulled out his checkbook and gave $2.5 million.

Dobo's generosity helps explain how three major aquariums within a 175-mile drive along the Carolinas coast can stay in business: They all got their money up front.
