WHEN THE newly formed Committee for the Public Understanding of Science (nowadays known as Copus), set up jointly by the Royal Society, the Royal Institution and the British Association for the Advancement of Science, met in 1986 to decide who should be the first ever recipient of the Michael Faraday Medal to reward excellence in the presentation of science to lay audiences and schoolchildren there was unanimous agreement that it should be awarded to Charles Taylor.
