Kurt Weill's Street Scene was given its Lyric Opera of Chicago premiere this fall. Within this quasi-opera, first given on Broadway in 1947, Weill used an array of styles for the many characters. The trouble is, none is particularly memorable.

Many of Lyric's characterizations smacked of comic strips, with too many accents suggesting the stereotype of Brooklyn rather than the Manhattan of the work's Depression-era setting.
