Gov. Pete Wilson and business leaders held the first meeting Wednesday of the California Mentor Council, which set a goal of recruiting a quarter of a million father figures by 2000.

Up to 70,000 Californians are acting as mentors to kids at risk, but there are an additional 78,000 children on waiting lists, Wilson noted in an executive order. It gives more money and authority to one of his favorite projects.
