STAKES, PROFILES HIGHER IN JUDICIAL CAMPAIGNS.(News)

In the 1960s and '70s, Joe Cerrell worked as a political consultant on the glamour campaigns - helping John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Pat Brown and others navigate California's choppy political waters.

But in 1978 he made a major career shift when nine Democratic judges appointed by former Gov. Jerry Brown were challenged by Republicans. Party leaders asked Cerrell to run their campaigns, and all nine were re-elected.

"I went from managing presidential elections to managing judges' races," Cerrell said.
