OTTMAR HITZFELD could now be contemplating life as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor. Instead, he's planning to break the Manchester United manager's heart.

Bayern Munich's wily coach, United's original choice to succeed Fergie when he was planning to quit at the end of this season, is confident his side will retain the European Cup.

And if he's right, it will be a bitter blow to Ferguson with this year's final being staged in Glasgow - the United manager's birthplace.
