The great blue heron perched regally beside Castaic Lake like a statue, its beak held high as if to show off its long, graceful neck and shimmery blue feathers.

The heron is a regular at the lake recreation area, which also draws white pelicans, egrets, eagles and 20 varieties of ducks.

Some birds stay between Christmas and April, finding the lake a warm place to stay for the winter. Other varieties are there year-round.
