One very dreary Sunday afternoon recently, I curled up in my living room to watch the 1944 film Since You Went Away. Starring Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Shirley Temple, Monty Woolley, Robert Walker, Joseph Gotten and Hattie McDaniel, this was David O. Selznick's answer to Mrs. Miniver, that inspirational British tribute to the homefront during World War II.
