WHEN a 1,000-year-old Chester penny goes under the hammer later this month, the winning bidder will go home with a relic from one of the most fascinating chapters in the city's history.

The silver penny comes from an age when Chester was the money-minting capital of England.

While Chester's Roman legacy has made the city famous, few know that it was once home to the largest mint in the country, more prolific than London.
